The cocktail & mocktail book

One cup. A dozen ways.

Every cup, every dip, every bottle works as well for a beer michelada as it does for a kid-friendly chamoyada. Here's how the pros at our family parties actually use them — alcoholic version on top, non-alcoholic swap underneath.

The Classic Michelada

Alcoholic version: 1 Original Michelada Cup, 1 cold Mexican lager (Modelo, Pacifico, Tecate), 1 lime, a few ice cubes.

Non-alcoholic version: Swap the beer for Topo Chico, Squirt, or an apple soda (Sidral Mundet works great). Same cup, same lime, same spice pack.

  1. Fill the cup halfway with ice.
  2. Pour the beer or soda slowly down the side.
  3. Squeeze half a lime in.
  4. Pull the spice pack out and sprinkle on top.
  5. Salud.

The Caliente

Alcoholic: 1 Caliente Michelada Cup, 1 dark beer (Negra Modelo) or lager, lime, optional Clamato.

Non-alcoholic: Same Caliente cup with Jarritos Toronja (grapefruit) or Squirt + lime. The chili heat carries the drink without needing beer.

The Mangonada

What you need: 1 Mango Cup, 1 scoop mango sorbet (or chunks of fresh mango), Mango Chamoy Rim Dip, chili powder, tamarindo straw if you can find one.

  1. Dip the rim of the cup in the Mango Chamoy Rim Dip.
  2. Layer mango sorbet/fruit into the cup.
  3. Drizzle more chamoy on top.
  4. Dust with chili powder.
  5. Stick the tamarindo straw in like a flag.

Fully non-alcoholic by default. Kid favorite.

The Watermelon Spritz

What you need: Watermelon Rim Dip, fresh watermelon chunks, sparkling water or seltzer, lime, ice. (Add a shot of tequila if you're going adult version.)

  1. Dip the rim of a tall glass in the Watermelon Rim Dip.
  2. Muddle watermelon at the bottom.
  3. Add ice, top with sparkling water (or sparkling water + tequila), squeeze of lime.
  4. Garnish with a watermelon wedge dragged through the dip.

The Tamarindo Mich

Alcoholic: Tamarindo Rim Dip, 1 Original or Caliente cup, 1 cold lager, tamarindo straw or tamarindo candy.

Non-alcoholic: Swap the beer for tamarindo Jarritos or Mexican Coke. The tamarindo rim + tamarindo soda doubles the flavor.

The Chamoyada (everyone's favorite)

What you need: Any rim dip flavor, fresh fruit (mango, pineapple, watermelon, jicama, cucumber), chili-lime seasoning.

Dip fruit chunks straight into the rim dip. Add chili-lime on top. Eat with your hands. No drink required — the chamoy IS the snack. Backyard party staple, no age limit.

The Margarita

Alcoholic: Jalapeño Margarita Mix (or Lemon-Lime Margarita Mix), tequila, ice, lime, optional spicy rim dip.

Non-alcoholic margarita mocktail: Margarita Mix + Topo Chico + lime + ice + rim dip. Same flavor, no liquor.

  1. Rim a rocks glass with rim dip (or just Tajín).
  2. Fill with ice.
  3. 2 oz tequila (or 2 oz Topo Chico for the mocktail) + 3 oz margarita mix.
  4. Squeeze fresh lime, stir, salud.
